Vichy Mineral 89 – My favourite Hyaluronic acid

Look at any skin care nerds shelf on Insta, you’re more than likely to spot Mineral 89 taking pride of place, alongside our most loved skin care products. Although Vichy only launched this product last year, it’s already amassed a cult following, from skin care geeks and beauty editors worldwide. Aside from the packing being pleasing on the eye, this little bottle promises a lot.

Now a few years back, I stayed clear of products that hydrated my skin as I thought they made me more oily. WRONG. At the time I was using products that stripped my skin of oils, my combination skin was screaming out for hydration! in turn, it was actually producing more sebum thus leading to very oily and imbalanced skin. These days I’m a big fan of products that hydrate the hell outta my face. But Mineral 89 is a product that claims more than just hydration.

What’s the deal?

The key ingredient is Hyaluronic acid – a naturally occurring sugar molecule that can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. As we age the ability to produce this molecule declines rapidly. Applying Hyaluronic acid to the surface of the skin can help to plump and hydrate the skin, by drawing moisture in for ultimate hydration. The mineral 89 is the level of thermal water that works on Strengthening the skin barrier function. This helps protect you from environmental damage.

15 minerals, No fillers, preservatives or fragrances which makes this suitable for even the most sensitive skin types.

What do I think of it?

The formula is of a gel consistency, Minimal packaging and a pretty bottle. The gel isn’t sticky or greasy. At first, I was surprised at how quickly it was absorbed by my skin. But I didn’t get the hydrating effect I was hoping for. If anything, it had the opposite effect and actually made my skin feel drier than before. At the time it seemed like a pretty pointless product to me, so was soon demoted to the back of the shelf. However, I decided to try a different approach after reading another review. Over the years I’ve learned that product application can make or break a product.

Everyone has their preferred way of using Mineral 89 but for me, simply applying after I’d cleansed just didn’t have the desired effect. Instead, I cleanse then spritz, using Caudalie grape water spray (This is the important part) while my skin is still damp this is when I apply mineral 89. Voilà! I can’t tell you the difference in effect this had on my skin. It’s like giving my skin a tall glass of water. I absolutely LOVE the refreshing and cooling effect on my tired skin first thing in the morning.

Final thoughts

My skin is now actually less oily, dewier and brighter. I don’t have those annoying dry patches and best of all my skin feels healthy. It’s certainly become a staple on my beauty shelf. I like that this product is inclusive of everyone and any skin type. Mineral 89 feels like the missing piece of my skincare routine, it’s amplified the overall effects of my other products.

Cons: Pricey, Vichy have explained the science behind the product but there should be more info on different ways to use Mineral 89.

Pros: hydrates skin, plumps, increases the benefits of other skincare, feels fresh and soothing.
